The color motif starts with traffic lights. Though everything seems against their love and though there seems to be no way to make things work between him and his lover (hence the red lights), Troye is determined to keep going, to let his feelings for this person blossom.

He is happy and ready to move forward (green light), but his lover is still stuck (red light) and not letting their relationship move forward.

Blue represents sadness, which Troye’s boyfriend is in. Since Troye wants to preserve their relationship, he’s willing to share the sadness, despite the pain it brings.

After all, when Troye sees his lover’s sadness, he sees his own insecurities within, which only increases his empathy.

When Troye says “I want you” he emphasizes the idea of wanting/needing someone regardless their flaws.

"I can't say no"

Troye’s unable to turn away from the negative effect the relationship has on him. Even if he knows that he should just drop it and get over his feelings, his attachment to this person is so strong that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep him near.

A “heart that beats slow” is another metaphor for unrequited love. Troye feels like, in comparison to his wild, enamored heart and feelings, this person is distant, refusing to admit that they should be together.

Cnsidering the previous line, this issue is making him “lose control” because he is consumed by the pain of loving someone who doesn’t fell the same.

His/her lover is sad and only sees the world as a bad place. Troye can see his lover is stuck into a world void of color, only paying attention to the dark side of their relationship (or life in general). His desire to help him see past his dark horizons is overwhelming and he is willing to do anything to keep him near.

However, this lines could also refer to unrequited love. Troye is aware that his feelings are not reciprocated and that the subject of his affection doesn’t see a possible relationship between the two of them, but he is determined to prove him wrong. He wants to show him that he can love him right.

"Without you I am colour-blind"

It’s clear that Troye wants to help his lover with his mood issues (he’s willing to do “Anything it takes to make him stay”) and in the process of showing him the bright side of the picture by “painting him a clear blue sky” he realizes that he depends on his boyfriend (and the relationship) a lot.

At the same time Troye tells him that without him he would live in a world with no colour, a sad world.
